Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, held meetings with Union Ministers Bhupender Yadav and Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday to discuss the urgent need for clearances of key water projects in the state.
Shivakumar, who also heads the state’s irrigation ministry, highlighted the importance of accelerating the implementation of the Mekedatu Project to ensure a sustainable water supply for the state. He also stressed the need to secure timely clearances for the Kalasa-Banduri Nala Projects, which are vital for addressing the region’s growing water scarcity issues.
In his meeting with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, Shivakumar urged for a swift resolution of environmental clearances for the Kalasa-Banduri irrigation project. This project aims to divert water to Karnataka’s arid districts but has faced obstacles due to the Mahadayi Water Dispute between Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra. The state has made concessions by reducing the land required for the project, cutting the Kalasa project footprint from 258 hectares to just 26.92 hectares, and the Banduri project from 243 hectares to 28.44 hectares, he said.
Shivakumar further discussed the ongoing inter-state water distribution challenges, referencing the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II decisions and seeking acknowledgment of the Union government’s commitment to equitable water sharing. The Deputy Chief Minister also made a case for the Upper Krishna and Upper Bhadra Projects, both of which were declared National Projects, ensuring enhanced funding and support.
Shivakumar emphasised the importance of collaboration between the state and central governments for the successful implementation of these vital projects.
